Atlas stands as one of the most powerful and tragic figures in all of Greek mythology. A towering Titan, he fought in the brutal Titanomachy. The war between the old gods (Titans) and the Olympians led by Zeus. When the Titans lost, Atlas was singled out for a punishment: he was condemned to hold up the sky for eternity.
He appears again in the stories of Heracles, when the hero tricks him into briefly taking the sky back, and in stories of the Atlas Mountains. Atlas embodies the ability to endure the impossible.
