The samurai were living weapons. They were trained from youth in the arts of war, they mastered swordsmanship, archery, horseback combat, and even firearms later on. At the heart of their identity was bushidō: the warrior code demanding honor, loyalty, and death before disgrace.
Under the command of powerful military rulers called shōguns, the samurai shaped the fate of Japan for more than 600 years. From the intensity of the Genpei War to the sieges of Osaka Castle, they fought with ruthless precision. One legendary tale tells of 47 rōnin: masterless samurai who waited over a year to avenge their lord’s death, striking with brutal resolve before calmly turning themselves in to face execution.
